TWO MONTHS EARLIER

Tay Nicholson hunkered down behind the wheel of her beat up Saturn and watched through her oversized shades as Ricki Wagner exited the XCellNourish warehouse and picked her way across the parking lot, swinging a leather briefcase in one hand. Tay’s gaze wandered greedily over her, probing every detail, from her confident gait to how she held herself as she strode along in her designer pumps. Her expertly coiffed and highlighted hair was not an indulgence that would fit into Tay’s current budget, by any stretch of the imagination. She fingered the blonde wig that she’d purchased online. The splurge had meant subsisting on instant noodles for a week, but she considered it an investment piece. She watched enviously as Ricki waved her key fob at a luxury BMW, the kind that purred to life and smelled of leather long after it left the assembly line. Tay turned the key in the ignition of her aging Saturn, grimacing as it coughed to life. As the white BMW pulled out of the parking lot, she followed at a discreet distance, determined to learn everything she could about the woman who enjoyed the benefits of a lifestyle that would be Tay’s, soon enough.

Up ahead, Ricki slowed to a crawl and signaled left before turning into the parking lot of a law office. Tay drove slowly past the building and parked on the street. She glanced in the rearview mirror to make sure she could see Ricki enter the building, and then rolled down her window to wait. To her surprise, Ricki remained seated in her car. Five minutes elapsed, before a young woman about Tay’s age came bounding down the front steps of the office, a camel-colored purse flapping at her side. Her face broke into a broad grin when she spotted the BMW.

"Hey, honey!" Ricki called through the open window to her.

The young woman jogged over to the car and climbed in on the passenger side. Tay picked at the stitching on her disintegrating steering wheel cover, the taste of bile polluting her saliva. This must be Ricki’s daughter—Brock’s daughter. She hadn’t known he had a child. But then she hadn’t known a lot of things about him. That was about to change in a big way. There was nothing she craved more than his love, but she wasn’t willing to share what he had to offer with a wife and daughter. The fiend inside her stirred, lashing its forked tongue: something needs to be done about them.

As she sat there simmering, her breathing came loud and ragged, as though she was underwater snatching at air through a snorkel. She gripped the steering wheel, willing herself to remain calm. This was neither the time nor the place to erupt in rage. Taking a hammer to Ricki’s BMW would only appease the fiend momentarily. She had more important work to do—beginning with finding out everything she could about Brock’s daughter. Information was power, and she wielded it like a maestro.
